The innocent are wronged and the guilty allowed to walk free. Too often the system fails those it is meant to protect. I work in the criminal justice system, and every day I see how fairness is not guaranteed. Whatever your role, you’d expect a fair trial. You might be a juror, a victim, a witness or – perhaps through no fault of your own – a defendant. You may not wish to think about it, but one day you or someone you love will almost certainly appear in a criminal courtroom. Shortlisted for Specsavers Non-Fiction Book of the Year. The third in the Percy Jackson series, the Titan's Curse follows on from Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters (my review of which you can read here), and follows hapless Greek demigod Percy as he seeks not only to deal with the trials and tribulations of puberty and very odd familial relationships, but also to save the world from an ancient evil known as Kronos. But given that I'm a mild-mannered sort, I'll hold off for a bit before giving you the wham-bam-shazam plot breakdown of Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse. Rather, I'd leap right into the fray, and the page would be awash with exploding monsters and long lost siblings. If I were author Rick Riordan, I'd not bother with my usual little introductory paragraph about the book I'm about to review. I'll put you on to an officer who may be able to help you.” The operator got back on the line: “Just a moment, sir. The Liaison Section was the first cog in the machine, the first sieve. She said, “Put him through to Liaison, Pat.” There had even been one pestiferous woman who, at every full moon, passed on messages from Bond on Uranus, where it seemed he had got stuck while awaiting entry into heaven. The switchboard had had quite a few such calls since, a year before, James Bond's death on a mission to Japan had been announced in the press. The girl at the switchboard at the Ministry of Defence flicked the switch to HOLD and said to her neighbour, “It's another nut who says he's James Bond. On that cold, clear morning in November he was to see the careful cogwheels in motion. One thing that James Bond, for instance, didn't know was the machinery at Headquarters for dealing with the public, whether friendly or otherwise-drunks, lunatics, bona fide applications to join the Service, and enemy agents with plans for penetration or even assassination. The latter is responsible for keeping the Top Secret record known as The War Book so that, in the event of the death of both of them, the whole story, apart from what is available to individual Sections and Stations, would be available to their successors. and his Chief of Staff know absolutely everything there is to know. The Secret Service holds much that is kept secret even from very senior officers in the organization. It was absolutely amazing! 5 Stars Plus!e, Emma Chase has created characters in Tangled that are insanely hilarious! Her character, Drew, had my sides splitting and in stitches over his witty and undeniably competitive personality! It is hands down the funniest and most creative book told by the male point-of-view! The first book was published in an edition of only 2,000 copies (compared with the last book which of which the first issue probably numbered 11,000 copies). Complete first edition sets of Ransome's Swallows and Amazons sailing adventures novels are rare. It presents reasonably well with the jacket in a protective cover, but some limited judicious intervention from a paper conservator to remove the tape and stabilise the tears might be wise.įirst editions, first impressions. Quite an uncommon Ransome first edition in the dust jacket. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is substantially complete, but has a long closed tear to the rear panel, also other minor chips and short closed tears to the edges, and in 3 places unfortunately some well intentioned but mis-guided previous owner has repaired them with tape, the longer tear to the rear showing burns from a much older tape repair that presumably flaked away, otherwise it is rubbed at the folds, lightly marked and the spine is slightly age darkened. The text block is slightly toned and dusty, with some minor foxing and a neatly written gift inscription to the first blank page. The book is firmly bound in clean dark green cloth lettered in gilt, the extremities are lightly bumped and rubbed and there are small patches of fading corresponding with loss to the dust jacket. This story is about emigration, about the will to leave. This fight over language was the story about my grandmother, the one that was always told. The second time the family left for New York, in 1924, she made it happen with her obstinacy. She put her foot down-her small, stubborn, newly American foot. In Norway, the child Aasta refused to speak Norwegian. My grandmother’s family sojourned for several years in America, and returned to Norway when my grandmother’s older sister, Signe, contracted polio.Īnd then something remarkable happened. When the Bergensfjord docked at Ellis Island on June 18, 1916, Esther was Aasta, a Norwegian baby, one year, one month, and five days old the day she met her father. No one photographed her first steps in America. I’ll be fifty-four myself soon, but when I was a child, she was the age a grandmother is. One blob is the lunar lander, the other is the flag. In the photo my grandmother took, the TV is a blur in a dark room. By then her mother’s bed was in the front parlor, her mother’s hair so long its ash-brown ends reached all the way back to Norway. It was the little journey of her cigarette, that slender rocket ship, its tip glowing as she watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon at the house on 56th Street. On the fiftieth anniversary of the moon landing, this summer, I was thinking about my grandmother Esther, in Brooklyn, and how in 1969 her orbit was bingo, the flea market, Eighth Avenue. However, Theseus defends Oedipus and rescues both Antigone and her sister who was also taken prisoner.Īt the end of the play, both Antigone and her sister mourn the death of their father. She stays with her father for the majority of the play, until she is taken away by Creon in an attempt to blackmail Oedipus into returning to Thebes. Antigone resembles her father in her stubbornness and doomed existence. Oedipus at Colonus Īntigone serves as her father's guide in Oedipus at Colonus, as she leads him into the city where the play takes place. Creon prevents him from taking the girls out of the city with him. He then begs Creon to watch over them, but in his grief reaches to take them with him as he is led away. The story of Antigone was addressed by the fifth-century BC Greek playwright Sophocles in his Theban plays:Īntigone and her sister Ismene are seen at the end of Oedipus Rex as Oedipus laments the "shame" and "sorrow" he is leaving his daughters to.
